Meet the Partners: INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory

INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, is the first, and so far the only, fully international research organization in Europe in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. INL is an international intergovernmental Research Organization (IGRO) with the mission to perform cutting-edge research and development in interdisciplinary nanotechnology and to function as an innovation integrator in multiple application domains.

INL was created under an international legal framework similar to that of other International Research organizations like CERN, EMBL or ESA and with the aim to become a global centre of excellence in applied nanotechnology research and is the result of a joint decision of the Governments of Portugal and Spain, taken on November 19, 2005. The centre provides a high-tech research environment to address major challenges of Nanotechnologies, in four main areas: Health, Safety in Environmental and Food Control, Renewable Energy, Information and Communication Technologies.

INL follows a multidisciplinary approach through the I3 model, which stimulates the cooperation and engagement among stakeholders in the generation of novel ideas that can turn into an innovation. This approach includes an effective form of cooperation and co-creation among organisations, which promotes the integration of stakeholders in the development process, who jointly co-create mutually valuable results, for the benefit of society.

The i3 model is based on: (i) Invention: the novel idea, concept, prototype, technology, material or process; (ii) Integration of national and international knowledge providers (RTD institutions, academia and industry) an integration of multidisciplinary areas and profiles (iii) Innovation through the development and application of new products, technologies and processes for the benefit of society.

Within the Project Sentinel, INL Team aims to develop the plasmonic sensors that will be encapsulated within the hydrogels, by making use of advanced nanotechnology strategies. INL brings to the consortium strong expertise in vitro testing and micro-and nano-fabrication.
