Meet the INL Team
Within Project Sentinel, INL Team - the Medical Devices Research Group - aims to develop the plasmonic sensors that will be encapsulated within the hydrogels, by making use of advanced nanotechnology strategies. INL brings to the consortium strong expertise in vitro testing and micro-and nano-fabrication. The INL Team is participating in the SENTINEL project by contributing with interdisciplinary expertise in biosensors through the hands of Lorena Diéguez with nanosensors, Sara Abalde Cela on oncobiology, Marta Aranda Palomer on spectroscopy and Maria Relvas on Analytical Chemistry and by Ahmed Mahmoud. The also counts on the collaboration of Sergio Quintero and Enrique Carbó-Argibay with their expertise in Optical Instrumentation and Electron Microscopy, respectively.
So far the team has developed gold nanoparticles for their integration in biomaterials as a sensing element for the monitorisation of cancer metabolites of prostate cancer patients. Initial tests have been done with surrogate markers and in vitro samples. Soon the team will start the in vivo and the ex vivo experiments.
Identifying and validating disease-specific biomarkers strongly contributes to the development of precision medicine and improvement in quality of life, namely by tailoring treatments to individuals or patient subgroups, as well as by enhancing efficacy and patient prognosis. Aligned with such goals, the SENTINEL project proposes a new monitoring technology for high-risk profile cancer patients by remote monitoring of molecular biomarkers.
